Hello, my name is Carel. I am a professional safari field guide and wildlife photographer born and raised in South Africa. As Erindi Private Game Reserve's Resident Photographer, I am making the most of every opportunity I get to give back to the environment.

Through my photography, I hope to make a positive impact on the world and inspire people to appreciate and protect the natural world. I believe that by sharing the beauty of nature, I can help create a more sustainable and harmonious relationship between humans and the environment.

What makes Erindi Special?

Erindi is unique because it’s a private reserve. That means there is a strict limit on the number of guests on the reserve at any given time. And Erindi is huge, more than 65,000 Hectares (5 times the size of Manhattan). This gives us an unprecedented opportunity to sit and observe wildlife uninterrupted by the hustle you'll find at most national parks and reserves across Africa. Most days, we might only ever see other humans back at the lodge. Otherwise, it's us and the bush. I promise you, you will compare every other trip you go on, or have been on in Africa, to Erindi.

Where Is Erindi?

Erindi Private Game Reserve is situated in central Namibia, approximately 2.5 hours north of Windhoek (the capital city of Namibia) by car. It covers an area of over 70,000 hectares and is one of the largest private game reserves in Southern Africa.

What Is In Carel's Gear Bag For This Trip?

With a focus on wildlife, landscape, macro and astrophotography on this trip, I recommend the following:

Cameras

Canon R6 - 20.1MP; 12 FPS Mechanical; 20 FPS Electronic; 12.7 Stops of Dynamic Range

I'll recommend bringing a camera with a high FPS (frames per second) and a wide dynamic range to make it easier to capture images of both wildlife and landscape. A high MP (Megapixel) would be of benefit if you would want to crop a lot and maintain image quality. A minimum of 10 FPS, 11 stops of dynamic range and a 20MP sensor is recommended, but not essential. More than one camera body is always a safe option, in case anything goes wrong.

Contact me if you are unsure about your camera.

Lenses

Canon RF 100-500 f/4.5-7.1

Canon RF 15-35 f/2.8

Canon RF 100 f/2.8 Macro

With longer lenses, you have the ability to fill more of your frame with your wildlife subjects. Wider lenses allow you to capture more of the environment. A telephoto lens is recommended for wildlife and a wide-angle lens is recommended for both landscapes and astrophotography. For astrophotography, a big aperture is of benefit. A minimum of 300mm for wildlife, a dedicated macro lens, a maximum of 50mm for landscape and astrophotography, and a maximum of f/4 for astrophotography is recommended, but not essential.

Contact me if you are unsure about your lenses.

Accessories

Leofoto LO-324C Tripod + BV-10 Head

Joby Gorillapod Rig

Godox M1 Light

Godox V860 III

Godox XPro Wireless Trigger

A sturdy tripod is essential for landscape and astrophotography. The only accessory needed for wildlife is a healthy dose of patience.

Contact me if you are unsure about your accessories.
